In the second part of the lecture was on "Why Nuclear Energy is Green and Sustainable". The reason why people say Nuclear Energy is that the Nuclear Power plants doesn't emit any kind of green house gases as its by product. At this state of time this criteria is considered a very impotent factor for a power source due to the increasing concentration of green house in our atmosphere. Other than that, the fossil fuel source is depleting in a very high rate and the supply of fossil fuel would end in another 100 years or so. Therefore, it is not sustainable unlike nuclear power. The nuclear power is considered sustainable because the amount of nuclear fuel that we use for the whole life spend of a Nuclear Power plant which is around 60 year compared to fossil fuel. therefore with the use of little amount of fuel and the amount of uranium which is available; the uranium supply could last us for more than 3000 years.

ReplyDeletea very interesting article. its clearly shown that nuclear power is enviromental friendly. i feel our goverment should work harder on inplementing it before 2021. as we know, we have already started to face effects due to global warming and i feel that, by using nuclear power, the threat of global warming will be lesser and d world will be a peaceful and healthy place to live. cheers

ReplyDeleteI attended the lecture too, and two things really struck me, that 1- We are running out of natural resources to generate energy,,2-Nuclear is the most viable and common sense substitute for present energy generation sources. And I was impressed that Nuclear is actually safe, as redundant safety features have been added. Also it is clean, and will cost less in the long run. I hope the government of Malaysia will be able to implement Nuclear Power Plant by 2021, as announced and keep to their word.

as i see in text, uranium supply could last us for more than 3000 years. but is there any other source supply after 3000years..???

Ravivarma and Jason i totally agree with u guys. I also really hope Malaysia will go nuclear in year 2021. its greener and more sustainable for this moment.at the same time can also safe our world from the green house gases by reducing the emission of CO2.
ReplyDeleteSivabalan: In the talk that day the speaker said that the 3000years is just and estimated years with the amount of uranium mining areas which are available now and in the future people will explore more mining areas and the estimated year might increase. 3000 years is quite a long time, and whit the technology that yet to come in the future, sure human race will find new power source , who knows may be from other planets before uranium source depletes.
